April 2007Introduction from the PresidentDear DACCNY Member, Nature has its own cycles, and they are far, far more predictable than economic cycles. We now that that an economy inevitably goes up or down, but we don't know when. In nature, we always know (approximately) when season follows season. Nature has its own recovery cycle from winter to spring, and a period of irrational exuberance in the summer. Then the bubbles burst in autumn and there is a slide down into the depths of winter. But we know that deep in winter lie the seeds of spring. That certain predictability is ultimately the source of all human wealth. If that predictability ever falters, if a warm summer is followed not by a cooler autumn, but something warmer still, then we will have much more to worry about than law firms building up their bankruptcy departments. Henrik Hall, Inc. takes on Meinertz Heating System Product LineDesign Lines by Henrik Hall, Inc., already the sole importer to the US of Knud Holscher's d line™ architectural hardware, bathroom, and commercial washroom fixtures, now stands ready to introduce the Meinertz heating products to the American market. As reported in our August newsletter, Meinertz successfully delivered radiators to several floors of The New York Times Building, where installation is ongoing. In addition, Meinertz radiators are used throughout the Bikuben Foundation NY, an academic guest house for Danish students in New York City, which also incorporates the famous d line™ door hardware and bathroom fixtures. Henrik Hall, founder of the company, is the former CEO of ASSA, Inc.; Arrow, Inc.; and Abloy Construction, Inc., and has been many years in the business of secure door hardware. His earlier responsibilities in Europe included CEO of Dorma Scandinavia and VP of Sales and Marketing with a/s Ruko and Assa Abloy. Mr. Hall took on the oversight of the d line™ product lines in North, South, and Central America starting in 2002, which then represented a very small portion of sales for the manufacturer, d line international a/s of Denmark. Today, this market is one of the top 10 in d line™ sales. Mr. Hall feels that the time is right for Meinertz in the US because the market value of efficiency and design is rising, offsetting the higher costs associated with the high-quality, small-quantity manufacturing process that Meinertz uses. Family-owned Meinertz takes great pride in their custom design and execution, and outstanding results are obtained when they are involved in the project from an early date. The space heating radiators, finned tubes, and the ProLine sub-floor convection grilles can be shaped and colored in any way desired, which makes Meinertz a 'green' architect's dream come true. |

Lundbeck to file US registration application for Potential BlockbusterDanish pharmaceutical company Lundbeck is close to completing development of Gaboxadol, a drug for the treatment of sleep disorder. The American Psychiatric Association (APA) has published abstracts from phase III studies of Gaboxadol on the internet, and Martin Parkhøj, pharmaceutical analyst at Danske Equities, says they show that Lundbeck has a product which is ready for registration. Claus Bræstrup, president and CEO of Lundbeck comments: "We have seen that three abstracts are on the internet, but they do not represent all data." The full conclusion from the phase III study will be presented at a conference in May, and Lundbeck plans, together with its partner Merck, to file a registration application in the US in the same month. Gaboxadol reportedly improves deep sleep without suppressing rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. At the end of 2006, investment bank Morgan Stanley estimated Gaboxadol to have a USD 1 bn sales potential in the US. Following news of the published clinical data on Wednesday, Lundbeck's share price jumped 7.7% on the Copenhagen bourse to 160.5. Lundbeck is an international pharmaceutical company engaged in R&D, production, marketing and sales of drugs for the treatment of psychiatric and neurological disorders. In 2006, the company generated revenues of DKK 9.2 billion (USD 1.6 bn). Lundbeck is headquartered in Copenhagen and employs approx 5,300 people globally. The news was reported by financial daily newspaper Børsen. |

President Bush Praises Novozymes' Cutting-Edge ResearchOn an otherwise flat Friday on the Danish bourse, Novozymes enjoyed a pleasant boost to its share price. The reason - a well-publicized visit the day before by US President George W. Bush to the company's US enzyme production and research facility in Franklinton, NC as part of a road show promoting the administration's ambitious "20 in 10" initiative to reduce gasoline consumption in America by 20% over 10 years. Alternative fuels such as bioethanol are a major part of the plan to achieve this goal, and Novozymes is the world leader in industrial enzymes for bioethanol production. The US already annually consumes about 7 billion gallons of bioethanol, but it is made using 1G enzyme technology from nutritional feedstuffs like corn. Increasing demand for corn from the en-ergy sector is causing corn prices to rise, putting pressure on American livestock farmers, so President Bush wants to see accelerated research into 2G enzyme technology that will enable pro-duction of "cellulosic" ethanol from waste products such as wood chips and grasses. 2G bioethanol research is right in Novozymes' technological backyard, and America's educator-in-chief is well aware of the fact. According to North Carolina's Daily Dispatch, President Bush de-scribed Novozymes' research as cutting-edge and said: "They are developing technologies that will enable us to convert wood chips into fuels that will run our automobiles." Following the visit, Novozymes President and CEO Steen Riisgaard commented: "We discussed with President Bush the importance of enzymes as a critical tool in making ethanol a commercially viable alternative energy that can make the world less dependent on oil. Using enzymes in the pro-duction of renewable fuels is the most sustainable way to cut production costs, decrease invest-ment needs and reduce pollution." Headquartered in Bagsværd, a northern suburb of Copenhagen, Novozymes is the world's largest and most diversified provider of industrial biotechnology, pioneering the replacement of chemicals with enzymes in a broad variety of industries such as laundry detergents, animal feed and the bio-fuel industry. The company has topped the Dow Jones Sustainability Index for the past five consecutive years. The news of the presidential visit was reported by The Daily Dispatch (N.C.), Examiner.com, and on the Novozymes website. Postscript: US Dept. of Energy to provide USD 385 m in funding for 6 cellulosic bioethanol plants over the next 4 years. |

Google Helps Danish Research Reach a Wider WorldAs President Bush amply confirmed when he visited Novozymes' biofuel-enzyme facility in Frank-linton, North Carolina, Danish research has plenty to offer the world. And now it's going to be eas-ier to keep track of what's hot in Danish research, thanks to Google. The Danish National Research Database has initiated a collaboration with the academic search portal Google Scholar, so that Danish research results can be accessed via both websites. In fact, the moment data is uploaded to the Danish National Research Database, it will be instantly available on Google Scholar (currently running in a beta version). Kim Østrup is chairman of Denmark's Electronic Research Library (DEFF), which founded the Dan-ish National Research Database. He is aware of the need to make Danish research more visible at home and abroad, and comments: "This is an important move, as Denmark in the age of globaliza-tion competes in terms of knowledge and the ability to instantly find the right information." "Google Scholar will serve as an additional entrance to the database. This forum will allow us to get in touch with a segment of users which is not already aware of us." The Danish National Research Database provides free access to Danish research on all topics. The data is automatically collected from a number of Danish institutions including the universities of Copenhagen, Århus, Aalborg and Roskilde, the Technical University of Denmark, and Risø National Laboratory. The news was reported on the DEFF website. |

International Businesses and Brands Benefit from Quality TranslationsSuccessful branding requires every aspect of a company's work to reflect the values and qualities of the brand. For businesses that operate in more than one linguistic and cultural market, embracing this principle has an additional implication: the need for quality translations. Scandinavian companies operating in the US and US companies operating in Scandinavia greatly benefit from the region's familiarity with English. But familiarity and local fluency are not the same. Businesses that compete in multiple markets require professional, high-quality translations or - to use translation industry jargon - localization. If a localized website, press release, report or user manual reads poorly or incorrectly, or does not take cultural context into account, it will have an impact on the target audience's perception of the company and brand. Before your company gets started, understanding what the localization process requires will make a project much easier. DACC-member Eriksen Translations Inc., a language services provider headquartered in Brooklyn, offers the following points to consider:
You can learn more about the translation process at www.atanet.org/docs/Getting_it_right.pdf and find out about Eriksen Translations' experience and expertise at www.erikseninc.com. |

Nordic Phytopharma Enters Lucrative Agreement with US FirmImmolina with Jurak Corporation World Wide Inc. (Jurak), a US dietary and herbal supplement network.
